July 21, 2016 (St. Louis) – It has been a very bad series for the Padres in St. Louis.  But tonight they got one more chance to avoid a sweep.  Andrew Cashner—despite swirling rumors that he could’ve been traded before his scheduled start tonight—was on the mound for San Diego against Adam Wainwright for the Cards.

We were halfway through the game before the first run, which was given to us by Alexei Ramirez’s single that scored Ryan Schimpf for a 1-0 Friar lead.  Travis Jankowski doubled, scoring Ramirez and the Padres went into the late stages of the game leading 2-0.

The Cardinals got a run back on red-hot rookie Aledmys Diaz’s single that scored Greg Garcia and the Pads’ lead was cut in half, 2-1.

The Padres got back out by two 3-1 on Ramirez’s double that scored Schimpf again.  Alex Dickerson drove him home on a single to make it 4-1.

Yangervis Solarte added one more run in the eighth on a solo homer that gave the Padres a 5-1 lead.

The Cardinals didn’t go away in their half.  Guess who drove in another run?  Yep.  Jedd Gyorko singled, scoring Jeremy Hazelbaker and the Pads led 5-2.

Then it happened.  In a matter of seconds, we had a tied game.  Stephen Piscotty hit a three-run home run just out of the reach of Jankowski’s glove and we were tied at five.

And then it was over.  After Carlos Villanueva was brought in for relief, he loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and guess who came up to bat?  The rookie Diaz.  He lined it to left and that was it.  The Cardinals swept the Padres 6-5.  Makes you think about the phrase “slipped right out of my hands,” doesn’t it?

The Padres head to our nation’s capital for a weekend series against the Washington Nationals.  Game one is tomorrow at 4:05 p.m.  Luis Perdomo will start for San Diego against Tanner Roark for the Nats.
