August 7, 2016 (San Diego) – The Padres looked to take the series from the Phillies in today’s matinee finale with a battle of the Jareds: Jerad Eickhoff for Philadelphia and Jarred Cosart on the mound for the Padres.
But the Phillies struck right away today. Odubel Herrera hit a solo homer in the first for a 1-0 Philly lead.
But the Padres tied the game in the third on Travis Jankowski’s sac ground out that scored Derek Norris and the score was tied at one.
But the Phillies jumped back out in front again with a Carlos Ruiz single in the fourth that scored Ryan Howard and the score was 2-1 Philadelphia. Freddy Galvis doubled to score Ruiz and the score was 3-1. Pitcher magic from Eickhoff made the score 4-1 as he doubled and scored Galvis. Herrera singled and scored Eickhoff and the score was 5-1 Phillies.
The Padres got some reprieve in their half of the fourth when Alex Dickerson hit a solo homer to right and the score was 5-2. The Poway High alum hit a sac fly in the sixth that scored Jankowski and the Phils’ lead was cut to 5-3. Ryan Schimpf finished the job with a two-run bomb that tied the game at 5. Who broke out now?
It would once again be the Phillies. Tommy Joseph singled in the seventh off of Brad Hand and scored Cesar Hernandez, making the score 6-5 Phillies. They’d take that score to the end and take the series from the Padres two games to one.
The Padres get a day off tomorrow before heading to Pittsburgh to take on the other Pennsylvania team, the Pirates, on Tuesday.
