August 12, 2016 (San Francisco) - San Diego State took the pitch for the first time in 2016 and fell at San Francisco, 2-0, in the Aztecs’ lone exhibition before its season opener. The teams played three 30-minute periods and one 15-minute overtime session before calling it a night.

The Dons scored what would be the game-winner at the 9:20 mark of the second period. Miciah Madison found Sonja Giraud, who found the back of the net.

The third period was just like the first with both teams unable score. SDSU had an opportunity to level the score with 1:30 left in the frame, but Camryn Wendlandt’s attempt from close range was stopped as a heavy fog began to swallow the field.

Then in overtime, USF added an insurance goal when Giraud repaid Madison as the latter scored the game’s second and final goal.

San Francisco outshot San Diego State, 8-6, but the Aztecs enjoyed an advantage in corner kicks, 6-2. USF finished with three saves, while SDSU had a pair.

San Diego State officially opens the campaign on Friday, Aug. 19, when UCLA visits SDSU Sports Deck at 7 p.m. PT. Admission is free.  ECM will have complete coverage from the game on both eastcountymagazine.org and @ECMagSports on Twitter.

USF goals: Giraud, Madison

SDSU goals: None
