March 6, 2021 (Seattle) - The Aztec men’s soccer team (0-2-1) lost a heartbreaker 3-2 in extra time at No. 8 Washington (4-1-0, 2-1-0) on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. SDSU was 59 seconds away from leaving Seattle with three points against a top-ten team, but saw the Huskies tie it up in the 90th minute and then win on a penalty kick 100 seconds into extra time.
Blake Bowen scored both of SDSU’s goals, one off a PK and the second off a beautiful pass from Tevenn Roux. Those were the Aztecs’ only shots on the game, while Washington had 18.
The Aztecs struck first, scoring in the 38th minute. In his first collegiate action, freshman John Foltyn got behind the Husky backline on the right wing and was tripped from the back inside the box to set up a PK. Blake Bowen converted to give SDSU their first lead of the season.
UW tied the match in the 57th minute when the ball bounced in after being played into a crowded box following a clear out on a free kick.
In the 65th minute, Bowen and Tevenn Roux had a beautiful give-and-go play. Bowen passed to Roux on the left side of the box and then cut to the middle where Roux sent a touch pass. Bowen evaded one defender to the left and then sent the ball across the box and inside the far post.
The Huskies scored the equalizer with 59 seconds left in regulation scoring off a free kick on the right wing that Ryan Sailor headed in.
In extra time, the Aztecs were whistled for a hand ball inside the box. UW’s Dylan Teves scored the game-winner in the lower right corner.
