July 7, 2023 (San Diego) - After finally sweeping somebody, the Padres were riding high into the weekend.  But would the fun continue as the Mets came to town?  Justin Verlander started tonight’s game one for New York against Yu Darvish.

With the bases loaded in the first, Daniel Vogelbach singled to score Brandon Nimmo, but in the home half, the Padres struck back, first with Manny Machado’s double that scored Ha-Seong Kim. Machado then scored on an error and the Padres led 2-1 after one.

Trent Grisham doubled in the second to score Gary Sanchez and Francisco Lindor hit a solo homer in the third and the Padres led 3-2 after three.

Vogelbach singled to score Francisco Lindor in the fifth and we were tied at three after five.  Nine innings wasn’t enough, so we went to extras.

Tom Cosgrove came in in the 10th and immediately gave up an RBI double to Jeff McNeil that scored Starling Marte and an RBI single to Francisco Alvarez that scored McNeil.  Lindor singled to score two.  Machado belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to get the Padres a little closer, but the Mets held strong and beat the Friars in extras 7-5.
