July 31, 2024 (San Diego) – Community Advocates for Just and Moral Governance (MoGo) launched a new portal on its website where community members can easily, and anonymously, if preferred, submit whistleblower complaints and public records requests (PRAs) in an effort to promote transparency and accountability.

The new website feature — which can be found at Whistleblower/PRA Form – Moral Governance and goes live on July 30th, coinciding with National Whistleblower Appreciation Day — is emblematic of MoGo's mission of holding the government accountable to The People. Under the California Public Records Request Act, it is the right of the People to request documents and information held by government agencies, concerning public business including government spending and operations. Similarly, whistleblowers play a critical role in exposing corruption, fraud, and abuse of power. All of this makes it possible to maintain integrity and accountability in our communities.

“I am thrilled to announce the launch of our new portal. By offering the option for anonymity, we empower individuals to speak up without fear of retaliation, fostering greater transparency and accountability in our government and communities. This is a significant step towards ensuring that everyone's voice is heard and that justice prevails,” said Geneviéve Jones-Wright, Executive Director of Community Advocates for Just and Moral Governance.

Whistleblowers are an important and vital aspect of keeping government agencies and organizations accountable. Sebastian Martinez, MoGo’s Deputy Executive Director, points to what he perceives as a recent uptick in reported corruption from elected officials in San Diego County, “It feels as if every other day a community member is brave enough to speak out about something illegal and/or deeply unethical that is happening to them. When you read about what’s taking place you see the same pattern of folks going through unimaginable duress and abuse and how our local institutions and the various leadership and personnel in place ultimately create an environment where the truth is repressed and recourse is impossible without support. More often than not, it seems these institutions and their actors even become active participants in suppressing those who should be protected. All of this creates prolonged suffering and injustice. Folks in San Diego County need to know there is space for them and an avenue to speak out and seek justice and information safely. MoGo can be that space, and the time is most certainly now.”
