April 23, 2016 (San Diego) - Game two of Cardinals-Padres saw the veteran ace Michael Wacha on the mound for St. Louis and the AA call-up Cesar Vargas pitching for San Diego.

Just as they did last night, the Padres started the hitting and scoring early in the first inning.  Melvin Upton Jr. hit a sacrifice fly that scored Wil Myers and the Friars took a 1-0 lead.

A quiet game until the sixth when Stephen Piscotty creamed a ball to left for his third home run of the season and a tied ballgame at one apiece.

In the Padres’ half of the sixth, Alexei Ramirez got the job done on a sacrifice fly that scored Matt Kemp and gave the Padres a 2-1 lead.

Then in the seventh, Brad Hand came in to pitch and ruined everything.  Matt Carpenter singled and scored Yadier Molina to tie the game at two.  It only took one batter for Andy Green to realize he’d made a mistake and took Hand out.  But a new pitcher wouldn’t solve anything; Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a three run homer to give the Cards a 5-2 lead.

In the eighth, former Padre Jedd Gyorko hit another three run homer to make the score 8-2 Redbirds.

In the top of the ninth, the Cardinals added one more on Randal Grichuk’s single that scored Piscotty and made the score 9-2 Redbirds.  Aledmys Diaz doubled and drove in two more and the Cardinals reached double digits, 11-2.  That would be the final score as the Cardinals take game two.

In transaction news, the Padres placed Alexi Amarista on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 20th) with a right hamstring strain to allow for Vargas’ call-up.  Vargas is the eighth Mexican-born pitcher to start for the Padres.
