April 11, 2016 (Philadelphia) - Andrew Cashner took the mound for the Padres to a crowd of 45,229 on Opening Day at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia in the first of a four-game series in the City of Brotherly Love.  Aaron Nola opposed him for the Phillies.

Nola was a tough arm to crack--Mark Grant described it as cracking a whip with every pitch he threw--but the Padres finally got him to open up in the third with Jon Jay’s double that drove home Alexei Ramirez for a 1-0 San Diego lead. Cory Spangenberg hit a sac groundout that brought in Alexi Amarista and the Padres led 2-0.

In the fourth, The Padres continued to break the game open with Wil Myers’ solo homer to give them a 3-0 lead.

The Phillies got a run back on an Odubel Herrera single in the bottom of the fourth, driving in Cesar Hernandez to cut the lead to two at 3-1.

The Phils kept creeping back.  In the fifth, Peter Bourjos doubled and scored catcher Cameron Ruopp to narrow the Padres’ lead to one.  It was 3-2 halfway through the ballgame.

In the sixth, Hernandez tied the game at three for the Phils and it was a whole new ballgame.

The Padres regained the lead in the seventh on an Amarista sac bunt to drive in Derek Norris and it was 4-3 Padres. That would be the final score as the Padres ruin the Phillies’ home opener.  Robbie Erlin takes the mound for the Pads tomorrow.  He’ll face off against former Pittsburgh Pirate Charlie Morton.
