July 25, 2016 (Toronto) - The Padres have never been to Canada.  Or at least, never to the Rogers Centre to face the Toronto Blue Jays.  They got their first taste of Canadian baseball tonight.  Colin Rea got the nod for San Diego against Aaron Sanchez for Toronto.

The game was kept quiet until the fourth inning with Troy Tulowitzki hit a sac fly that scored Michael Saunders and the Jays struck first, taking a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, the Jays increased their lead on Devon Travis’ broken-bat double that scored Kevin Pillar and the lead was 2-0 Toronto.  Reigning American League MVP Josh Donaldson singled and scored Travis and the Jays went up 3-0.

The Jays added one more in the eighth with Pillar’s double that scored Tulowitzki and the Blue Jays led 4-0.

Alex Dickerson wouldn’t let the Padres’ first trip to Canada be a miserable one.  He crushed a two-run homer to right in the ninth to cut the lead in half.  4-2 Jays.  But the Padres’ reception into Canada would be a cold one as they lose game one to the Jays 4-2.

Tomorrow’s game two is also a 4:07 p.m. start.  Andrew Cashner will go against the dealing Jays rookie Marcus Stroman.

Transaction news:

  • Padres recalled left hander Keith Hessler from AAA El Paso
  • Optioned right hander Kevin Quackenbush to AAA El Pas

Please note:

Even though the AL East is my forte, I'm not sure why the Blue Jays start every game at the :07 mark.  It's strange.
