June 23, 2016 (Cincinnati) - After failing to sweep (again), the Padres traveled west to the Great American Ballpark and back to the National League to face the Cincinnati Reds for the first time this season in a four-game weekend series.  Christian Friedrich started on the mound for San Diego against John Lamb for Cincinnati.

The Padres got the runs started in the second with Alexei Ramirez’s sac groundout to drive home Melvin Upton Jr. and San Diego took a 1-0 lead.

Then in the third, in typical Padres fashion after a Zack Cozart double, Billy Hamilton doubled, but the throw to second got past Adam Rosales, making Hamilton move to third and Cozart score to tie the game at one.  Brandon Phillips singled and Hamilton came home and the Reds took a 2-1 lead.  Adam Duvall hit a two-run homer and the Reds jumped up 4-1.  And you thought this was going to be an easy series.

The Padres got one back in the fourth on Matt Kemp’s solo homer.  4-2 Reds.

Two innings later in the sixth, Yangervis Solarte singled and drove in Wil Myers and the Reds’ lead was cut to one at 4-3.

But wait!  Don’t lose hope yet!  After J.C. Ramirez relieved Lamb, Derek Norris launched a three-run homer, his 10th homer of the season and the Padres took a 6-4 lead.

The Padres added one more run in the ninth with a Travis Jankowski single that scored Rosales and the Pads took game one 7-4.

The Padres have another 4:10 p.m. start against the Reds tomorrow.  Colin Rea will start for the Friars against the recently called-up Cody Reed for Cincy.
