July 6, 2016 (Phoenix) - The Padres aren’t going to get a sweep opportunity this series, but they would get an opportunity to take the series from the Diamondbacks tonight.  Colin Rea started for the Padres against a rare, slumping Shelby Miller for Arizona.

The Diamondbacks got things started in the first with Chris Hermann’s single that scored Paul Goldschmidt to give them a 1-0 lead.

Yasmany Tomas singled in the third, scoring Hermann and the Dbacks went up 2-0.  Brandon Drury blasted a two-run homer to give the Dbacks a 4-0 lead.

The Padres broke the shutout with Yangervis Solarte’s single in the fourth to score Wil Myers and the score was 4-1.  Melvin Upton Jr. doubled, scoring Matt Kemp and the Dbacks’ lead was cut in half, 4-2.  Derek Norris hit a sac groundout to score Solarte and suddenly, the shutout the Dbacks had been enjoying was now a one-run lead, 4-3.  And then it was gone; Ryan Schimpf hit a two-run homer of his own and the Padres took a 5-4 lead.  The guy hasn't had a bad first time big league stint.

Solarte doubled in the fifth, scoring Travis Jankowski and the Padres went up 6-4.

Myers doubled in the seventh, scoring Alex Dickerson and the Padres went up 7-4.  Kemp singled to drive in two and the Padres went up 9-4.

After Josh Collmenter was brought in to pitch in the ninth, Yan made Chip Hale pay for the change with a three-run bomb to make the score 12-4 Padres.  That was followed by another homer by Schimpf, this time a solo, to make the score 13-4.

The Dbacks tried to rally in their half of the ninth with Jake Lamb’s two-run homer, but the Padres would stop them short and take the series two games to one with a 13-6 win.

The Padres come back to California to face the NL West rival Dodgers for a four-game series before the All-Star break.  Game one is tomorrow at 7:10 p.m.

In transaction news, the Padres have claimed right hander Jake Smith off of waivers from the Giants.
