April 21, 2016 (San Diego) - The Padres were looking for the sweep in the final game of the series against the yinzers from Pittsburgh.  James Shields was on the hill for San Diego, with Pirates ace Gerrit Cole on the mound for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates, seeking revenge for the last two games, struck first in the second with Josh Harrison's single that scored Gregory Polanco from second and made the score 1-0 Bucs.

Harrison drove in another run on another single, this time in the fourth and scoring Starling Marte.  2-0 Bucs.  Shields threw a wild pitch that brought Harrison 90 feet from third base and the Pirates led 3-0.

With the bases loaded in the seventh against recently called up Leonel Campos, John Jaso doubled and drove in--guess who--Harrison and the Pirates extended their lead to 4-0.  The Buccos loaded the bases again and David Freese drove a single up through center and drove in two and the Pirates from Pittsburgh led 6-0.  Marte drove in an RBI on a double to score Andrew McCutchen and the score was 7-0 Pirates.  The Bucs kept going.  Francisco Cervelli singled and drove in two more to make the score 9-0.  Jordy Mercer hit a sacrifice groundout and drove in a run and the Pirates reached double digits at 10-0.  Brad Hand walked Sean Rodriguez with the bases loaded and Polanco scored to make the score 11-0.  We’re back to where we were at the beginning of the season.

The Padres avoided a shutout on Jon Jay’s RBI single that scored Adam Rosales and made the score 11-1 Pirates.  But 11-1 would be the final score.  They raise the Jolly Roger in Pittsburgh as the Pirates avoid the sweep, but the Padres win the series two games to one.

In Padres transaction news, the Padres placed starting pitcher Robbie Erlin on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow sprain, retroactive to April 18th.  Right-hander Campos was recalled from AAA El Paso.  The Padres start a three game series against the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow night at 7:40 p.m.  A good pitching matchup awaits:  Andrew Cashner vs. Adam Wainwright.
