January 23 (Wednesday, 7:00 p.m.) — The Mysterious Galaxy BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP is a book club that reads a little bit of everything. They alternate between reading science fiction, fantasy, mystery, thrillers, and horror so there is something for everyone in this club and it is also a great way to discover and talk about books that might be outside of your normal genre.

January 26 (Saturday, 1:00 p.m.) — ADVENTURES BY THE BOOK® is pleased to announce our Books & Bingo Free Library Adventure with 13 authors, including our keynote speaker Laura Kamoie and our opening speaker Melanie Benjamin at 1775 Dove Ln, Carlsbad, CA 92011. January 27 (Sunday, 2:00 p.m.) — Ian Rankin signs In a House of Lies. When he was supposed to be working towards a PhD in Scottish Literature, author Ian Rankin instead spent those three years writing novels. He had worked a myriad of jobs, such as grape-picker, journalist, and swineherd before finding success with his Rebus series of novels. His latest Rebus novel is the much anticipated In a House of Lies.

January 30 (Wednesday, 7:00 p.m.) — A magical night with three incredible young adult authors, Brigid Kemmerer, A.C. Gaughen, and Mimi Yu, who will be in conversation with Stacee Evans.

 

Brigid Kemmerer is the author of The Elemental series and a few standalones, which include Letters to the Lost and Thicker than Water. Her newest book, A Curse So Dark and Lonely, is a dark and enticing "Beauty and the Beast" retelling.

 

A.C Gaughen grew up always writing, for even when she was thirteen years old, she was submitting novels. Gaughen has a Masters in Creative Writing from St. Andrews University in Scotland and a Masters in Education from Harvard University.

 

Mimi Yu’s debut Young Adult fantasy novel, The Girl King, is a sweeping story set against a world of buried ancient magic and political intrigue weaves an unforgettable story of ambition, betrayal, and sacrifice.

January 30 (Wednesday, 6:00 p.m.) — Warwick's and the La Jolla Riford Library present LA JOLLA READS! Every four months they choose a different title for everyone to enjoy. At the end of four months they will all gather at the library to discuss the current selection and announce the new selection. January 31 (Thursday, 11:45 a.m.) — BOOKED FOR LUNCH, Madhuri Vijay is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was an Iowa Arts Fellow and a recipient of the Henfield Prize. Vijay’s writing has received a Pushcart Prize, as well as a 30-Below Prize from Narrative Magazine, and has appeared in Best American Non-Required Reading, Narrative, and Salon, among other publications. The speaker will be Leon Lazarus, owner of CalBrand, a marketing and branding consulting firm. His presentation will focus on the importance of creating effective email messages in any marketing campaign.

 

After studying Journalism and New Media at Rhodes University in South Africa, Leon Lazarus developed a career in corporate communications and marketing. He worked with many of the largest corporations on the African sub-continent.
