July 19, 2017 (San Diego) -- Like a zombie rising from the grave, Crown Books has come back to life. Like Borders and a number of other book sellers who were killed off by the likes of Amazon, they bit the dust in 2001 after being the third largest bookstore in the country. But the spirit was still alive and was bought lock stock and barrel including the loco and name by Rancho Penasquitos businessman Andy Wiess and reincarnated in Encinitas. They now sell used books at low prices.

But if you want to find a book more current and even meet the authors, look below and give an author some support by visiting one of the following book signings.

July 8, 2017 (San Diego) -- If you are like me, you like to scan and feel a book before putting out hard cash for a copy. With online bookstores like Amazon and their ilk causing many brick and mortar bookstores to go out of business, other than the local library, it is getting more difficult to do this. Being a minor author myself, I feel guilty in telling you this as it deprives authors of their well-earned royalties. However, I enjoy browsing through thrift and second hand shops. I know that it is impractical, but I believe that no book should be sold commercially unless the author gets some kind of remuneration.

July 1, 2017 (San Diego) -- If you are going to lie around on the beach this summer season, at least bring a good book. The way to find a good book is to visit an author's book signing. There are signings of everything from self-help to graphic space novels. Also, for you writers and would be writers, there are job openings and classes to take. This week we have Words to Live By by local author Lee Silber.
