August 18, 2018 (San Diego) – Top events this week include the San Diego Book Festival and East County Fest, where many prominent local authors will be signing copies of their books.

NATURE CLASSES: Throughout the month of August, the Allied Gardens/Benjamin Branch Library in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department will be presenting four one-hour classes to help connect youth to nature by encouraging exploration and study of the world around us. Presented by author of the Sunbelt book Nature Adventures! Guidebook of Nature Facts, Songs, and Hikes in San Diego County, Linda Gallo Hawley!

The program will take place on Friday August 24th at 10:00 am and is suitable for children ages 7 – 10 years. Sign up required as space is limited. Register through the event listing linked here.

August 19 (Sunday, 11:30 a.m.) — COFFEE WITH THE CATAPULT. August 19 (Sunday, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.)Michael Wilken-Robertson will discuss and sign Kumeyaay Ethnobotany: Shared Heritage of the Californias at the Alpine Historical Society. August 19 (Sunday, 2:00 p.m.) — Join Southern CA crime authors Howard Michael Gould and Adam Walker Phillips for an afternoon of criminal pursuits.

Last Looks is a scorchingly funny debut thriller by screenwriter Howard Michael Gould. It features former top LAPD detective, Charlie Waldo, who has been living as an ascetic recluse in penance for his role in a terrible mistaken conviction. He reluctantly agrees to come out of seclusion to help with a case involving Alastair Pinch, an acclaimed Shakespearean actor-turned cheesy TV star accused of murdering his fourth wife.

The Big Con: A Chuck Restic Mystery by Adam Walker Phillips.  Chuck Restic, HR manager and part-time private investigator, has a problem: the consultant guru Julie St. Jean is the bane of his existence. Over his twenty-year HR career, he's been forced to partner with her on inane employee engagement programs whose only value has been to Julie's sizable bank account.

August 20 (Monday, 7:30 p.m.) — Local author T. Greenwood will be at the Galaxy to sign her new book Rust & Stardust, which is “based on the experiences of real-life kidnapping victim Sally Horner and her captor, whose story shocked the nation.” Known for Bodies of Water and her many other works, Greenwood is an acclaimed author whose mysteries have been holding readers captive for years.

August 21 (Tuesday, 11:00 a.m.) — SUMMERTIME STORIES and a craft.

August 23 (Thursday, 7:30 p.m.) — Warwick's will host T. Jefferson Parker to discuss and sign his new book Swift Vengeance. T. Jefferson Parker is the author of numerous novels and short stories, the winner of three Edgar Awards, and the recipient of a Los Angeles Times Book Prize for best mystery.

Returning hero and private investigator Roland Ford is on the trail of a mysterious killer who is beheading CIA drone operators and leaving puzzling clues at each crime scene. His troubled friend Lindsay Rakes is afraid for her own life and the life of her son after a fellow flight crew member is killed in brutal fashion.

August 24 (Friday, 7:00 p.m.)Young Adult Book Club meeting featuring Roar: A Stormheart Novel.

August 27 (Monday, 7:30 p.m.) — Warwick's will host Anya Yurchyshyn to discuss and sign her new memoir, My Dead Parents.

Anya Yurchyshyn grew up in a narrow townhouse in Boston, every corner filled with the souvenirs of her parents' adventurous international travels. August 27 (Monday, 7:00 p.m.)T. Jefferson Parker signs Swift Vengeance.

A Southern Californian native, T. Jefferson Parker began his career writing as a reporter for newspapers which helped give him the knowledge and inspirations for his first novel, Laguna Heat.  Jeff's novels primarily focus on crime mysteries occurring in Southern California.

Swift Vengeance is a riveting thriller involving a killer who targets a team of military drone operators. San Diego private investigator Roland Ford becomes involved when one of the fliers asks for his help after receiving a chilling death threat in the mail. Ford contacts local FBI terrorism specialist Joan Taucher, and things get serious fast when one of the drone operators is beheaded.

August 30 (Thursday, 7:30 p.m.) — Local author and acclaimed national journalist Seth Hettena will be at The Book Catapult to discuss and sign his new book, Trump/Russia: A Definitive History. Seth will be in-conversation with Richard Marosi, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist who covers the US/Mexican border for the Los Angeles Times.

September 2 (Sunday, 3:30 p.m.)Kathy Krevat, author of the Gourmet Cat Mystery series,  is also familiar to mystery readers as Kathy Aarons, author of the Chocolate Covered mystery series. Both series feature strong women who run their own businesses while they track down murderers in their spare time.
