April 11 (Friday, 7:30) — Capt. Scott Campbell, Jr., Star of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch comes to San Diego. Join Capt. Scott Campbell, Jr., star of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch and San Diego author Jim Ruland for a book singing and Q&A at 3rdSpace 4610 Park Blvd San Diego, CA 92116. To celebrate the release of their new book, Giving the Finger: Risking It All to Fish the World’s Deadliest Sea (Lyons Press, April 2), Ruland and Campbell (who goes by Junior) will engage in a spirited conversation full of salty tales about his life as an Alaska crab fisherman. Books will be available for purchase and a signing will follow.

Giving the Finger tells the story of Junior’s adventures at sea before he joined the cast of Deadliest Catch. The son of a crab fisherman, Junior had to work extra hard to convince his taskmaster father that he had what it took to brave the long hours and brutal conditions of the Bering Sea. Then he learned the hard way that his father wasn’t kidding: during the course of his career he’s run his boat aground, decapitated part of his finger, and lost a member of his crew during a freak accident.

Scott Campbell, Jr. aka Junior grew up in Walla Walla, Washington. Junior first started salmon tendering with his dad when he was four years old and has been crab fishing since he was sixteen. The captain of the F/V Seabrooke has been a member of Deadliest Catch 2010.

Jim Ruland is a veteran of the Navy, author of the short story collection Big Lonesome, and host of the reading series Vermin on the Mount, now in its tenth year. Ruland is the recipient of an NEA fellowship and was the grand prize winner of Reader’s Digest 2012 Life Stories Contest. Tyrus Books will publish his debut novel, Forest of Fortune, later this year.

3rdSpace is a modular, dynamic hub of creativity and connectivity, where the co-working experience is complimented by unique events, workshops, and discussions in a relaxed, conductive and fun environment that will redefine how you work, play and find your inspiration. 3rdSpace has been the San Diego home of Jim Ruland’s irregular, irreverent reading series Vermin on the Mount since 2012.

But by the time their visit to Greece was over, Nix had withdrawn from their friendship, and Mary had no idea why. About the book and Paul Stanley: Well known for his onstage persona, the "Starchild," Paul Stanley has written a memoir blending personal revelations and gritty tales of the highs and lows both inside and outside of KISS. Born with a condition called microtia (an ear deformity rendering him deaf on the right side), Stanley's traumatic childhood experiences produced an inner drive to succeed in the most unlikely of places: music. April 19 (Saturday, 7:00 pm) — Northern California poet Roy Mash will read from his new book Buyer’s Remorse; and Steve Kowit, the Poet Laureate of San Diego, will read from his book The Dumbbell Nebula at D.G.Wills Books, 7461 Girard Avenue, La Jolla, 858-456-1800, www.dgwillsbooks.com.

Buyer’s Remorse is a celebration of the small, the overlooked, and the underrated. Doggedly anti-lofty, reveling in the This-Worldly, the poems caper around the themes of the body, of mathematics and rationality, adolescence and middle-age, love and fear and death. The tone ranges from the irreverent to the wistful – the spritz of seltzer in the face of the Creature from the Black Lagoon to the lover standing in one sock. Drawing on sources from The Three Stooges to Archimedes, Lavoisier to Tweety Bird, Mash is a latter day Anti-Oracle, a nail in the tire of post-modernity, an incorrigible wag who’s smuggled his pea shooter into the Church of Poetry. Be ready to duck.

Roy Mash is a long time board member of the Marin Poetry Center. In a previous life he held degrees in English, Philosophy, and Computer Science. His poems have appeared widely in journals such as Agni, Atlanta Review, Barrow Street, Nimrod, Passages North, Poetry East, Rhino, and River Styx.

Steve Kowit is the Poet Laureate of San Diego. He studied poetry with Ned O’Gorman at Brooklyn College, Stanley Kunitz at the 92nd Street Y, and Robert Lowell at the New School for Social Research. Kowit has taught at Southwestern College and San Diego State University for many years. His books include Lurid Confessions; Crossing Borders; The First Noble Truth; The Gods of Rapture; and In the Palm of Your Hand; and he edited the noted anthology The Maverick Poets.

About the book: With Swimming to the Moon, McMahon aims to keep the tradition of hardcover books and bedtime reading alive with a collection of tall tales and silly stories told in a whimsical and wonderful way.

For more information regarding the event, please contact Warwick's Books | 7812 Girard Avenue | La Jolla, Ca | 92037 | Ph. (858) 454-0347 | www.warwicks.com.
