January 27, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)—The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Saturday due to high winds and warm, dry weather that will create “explosive fire growth potential.”

The NWS notes that recent rainfall and the impact on fuels will be a “mitigating factor” but adds, “given the strength of the winds and the very dry conditions, any large fire stars could result in rapid fire growth."

Gusty northeast winds are forecast for San Diego County inland valleys and mountain areas, including Palomar and Cleveland National Forest areas. The red flag warning will be in effect from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, upgraded from a previously issued fire weather watch. Winds are expected to weaken Saturday evening, though dry conditions will continue into Sunday.
