Three Aztecs garner offensive, defensive and rookie accolades

March 12, 2018 (San Diego) - The San Diego State lacrosse team swept all three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week awards on Monday, as Jill Haight garnered offensive honors, Bailey Brown earned defensive recognition, while Lexi Tan was selected as top rookie.

With their accolades, the Aztecs have collected 10 weekly conference certificates already this season, logging multiple winners on three separate occasions.

A native of Milton, Ga. Haight propelled the Scarlet and Black to a 2-1 record last week with another series of steady performances, combining for seven goals, 14 draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers in three games for her second consecutive career MPSF award after earning the league’s defensive honor last week.

In SDSU’s 22-2 conquest of Presbyterian on March 5, Haight totaled three goals, four draw controls and two caused turnovers while collecting four ground balls to tie a personal best. The following day vs. Niagara, she lifted the Aztecs to an 18-16 victory, scoring all of her game-high four goals in the first half while winning a team-best six draw controls to go with one ground ball and one caused turnover. On March 10 against fourth-ranked Boston College, the SDSU junior once again topped the squad with four draw controls and caused one turnover in a 19-8 setback.

For the season, Haight leads the Aztecs with 20 goals, 42 draw controls, 14 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. She has connected on 6 of 8 shots from the free position and maintains a .778 shot-on-goal percentage 28-36). In addition, the SDSU midfielder leads the MPSF with 5.25 draw controls per game, which ranks 33rd nationally.

A product of Katy, Texas, Brown recorded two goals, 10 draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers en route to her third conference weekly accolade this season after receiving back-to-back rookie distinction on Feb. 19 and Feb. 26. Against Presbyterian, the Aztec freshman contributed to the Scarlet and Black’s winning effort with one goal, three draws, one ground ball and one caused turnover. She also over figured prominently in last Tuesday’s triumph over Niagara, netting one goal to go with a career-high seven draw controls while tying her personal best with two ground balls. Later, the SDSU midfielder finished the week with one ground ball and one caused turnover vs. BC.

Overall, Brown has found the back of the net on four occasions this season and ranks second on the squad with 24 draw controls to go with eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Tan, meanwhile, scored her first five goals in Aztec uniform last week for her initial career MPSF accolade, finishing with a .625 shot percentage (5-8) and a .875 shot-on-goal percentage (7-8) at the attack position. The Towson, Md., native registered her first collegiate hat trick vs. Presbyterian and also scored a key goal in the first half against Niagara, which gave SDSU an 11-3 lead at the time, as the Aztecs held on for the victory. The Aztec redshirt freshman also collected a ground ball vs. the Purple Eagles before recording SDSU’s first goal of the second half against Boston College.

San Diego State embarks on two-game road trip to South Carolina this weekend, squaring off against Furman on Friday, March 16 starting at 2 p.m. before crossing paths with Wofford on Sunday, March 18 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
