November 23, 2017 (Fullerton) - While most of us were probably in bed with food comas after Thanksgiving dinner, the San Diego State Aztecs men’s basketball team was in Fullerton at the Wooden Legacy in their quarterfinal matchup against Sacramento State.

Much like the Eastern Illinois game on Monday night, SDSU absolutely dominated the first half, leading by more than 20 points midway through the half.  Thanks to a smooth three and two made free throws by junior Devin Watson at the end of the half, the Aztecs were up by 30 on the dismal 1-3 Hornets.  That 10:00 p.m. tip-off didn’t bother the red and black at all like we were worried it would and by the time the first half ended, they led by almost 40; 49-14 Aztecs heading into the locker room.

The Aztecs continued their dominance in the second half as freshman Matt Mitchell was on his way to another stellar game, reaching double digits in points. Seniors Trey Kell and Malik Pope followed up by putting the Aztec lead at over 40, Pope with a sweet one-handed jam.  He did it again after a turnover gave him an alley-oop opportunity and he didn’t disappoint.  By the end of the game, all 11 Aztecs had scored.  The Aztecs trounced the shorter, slower Hornets 89-52 to move on to the semifinals tomorrow.

SDSU will face Georgia tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in round two of the Legacy. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
