Aztec midfielder also ranked 15th on TDS Freshman Top 100 List

December 28, 2016 (San Diego) - San Diego State men’s soccer player Pablo Pelaez added to his growing list of postseason accolades recently after collecting second-team all-freshman honors from College Soccer News. In addition, the Aztec midfielder was featured on Top Drawer Soccer’s Men’s Division I Freshman Top 100 postseason list, earning a No. 15 ranking.
Earlier, Pelaez was a first-team all-Far West Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) after receiving second-team all-Pac-12 Conference recognition. He also earned a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer’s Freshman Best XI as a second-team pick.
Pelaez enjoyed a tremendous rookie campaign in 2016, becoming the first Aztec to garner first-team all-region accolades since Daniel Steres accomplished the feat in 2011. The San Diego native started all 18 matches he appeared in, compiling seven points on two goals and three assists. Pelaez tallied his first career goal at Stanford on Oct. 13, and logged his first game-winner in a Scarlet and Black uniform in the finals seconds of regulation at No. 11 Washington on Nov. 6, to help the Aztecs complete their first-ever season sweep of the Huskies. He shared team lead with 40 shots on the year, including 26 in Pac-12 play, which ranked sixth in the conference.
Not to be outdone, Pelaez was one of a school-record 10 SDSU players to earn Pac-12 all-academic distinction this month after receiving honorable mention.
San Diego State finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-4-6 overall record highlighted by its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2006. The Aztecs, who finished the regular season ranked 19th by the NSCAA and 15th by Soccer America, posted a 3-2-2 record against teams ranked in either of the aforementioned Top-25 polls during the year, including a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Akron at home on Sept. 2.
