January 19, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State water polo head coach Carin Crawford has won the 2016 Sandy Nitta Distinguished Coaching Award for the Pacific Southwest Zone, USA Water Polo announced in early January. The honor is the first of Crawford’s career.

Entering her 19th season, Crawford wins an award named after her national team coach, Sandy Nitta. An Olympic swimmer as a teenager, Nitta transitioned to water polo and was the head coach of the women’s national team in the 1980s and 1990s. Nitta helped the U.S. to bronze medals at the 1986 and 1991 World Championships.

Crawford is one of nine zone winners and is now eligible to win the national Sandy Nitta Distinguished Coaching Award, which will be revealed later this year.

The Aztecs, under Crawford’s direction, won the Golden Coast regular-season title for a third straight year in 2016, and captured the conference tournament crown for the first time, earning the GCC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship where they finished in eighth place.

Crawford will guide SDSU into the 2017 campaign with a preseason national ranking of No. 15. The 15th-ranked Aztecs will begin their campaign on Saturday when they face the San Diego State alumni beginning at 11 a.m. PT at Aztec Aquaplex. Admission is free.
