SDSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT SAN JOSE STATE 84-67

Sophia Ramos and Baylee Vanderdoes both had double-doubles

December 7, 2019 (San Jose) - The Aztec women’s basketball team (4-6, 1-1) fell to San Jose State (7-3, 2-0) 84-67 on the road Saturday afternoon.

Taylor Kalmer and Sophia Ramos each posted season-highs to lead SDSU in scoring. Kalmer finished with a career-high 22 points and Sophia Ramos stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Baylee Vanderdoes recorded a double-double as well, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from Taylor Kalmer, the Aztecs went on an early 8-0 run to grab a 12-6 lead. The Spartans, who lead the conference in scoring, responded with an 11-0 run to retake the lead and never relinquished it.

Turnovers plagued the Aztecs throughout the first half. They had 14 in the opening 20 minutes, including eight in the first quarter, which led to 19 Spartan points.

Ayzhiana Basallo hit a step-back three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Spartans a 12-point halftime edge (42-30), their largest lead up to that point.

The Spartan lead would balloon to 16 points but SDSU cut it back to 10 points at the end of the third quarter.

The Aztecs cut the deficit to eight points four times in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans scored on the following possession each time and eventually pushed their lead to 17.

The Spartans shot 50 percent from three, knocking down 10 three-pointers. Ayzhiana Basallo, who leads the Mountain West in scoring finished with 20 points. Megan Anderson had 17 points and Tyra Whitehead added 16.

STAT OF THE GAME

The Aztecs entered the game averaging 13 turnovers per game but committed 14 in the first half which led to 19 Spartan points.

THE NOTE I

Sophia Ramos (20 points & 10 rebounds) and Baylee Vanderdoes (10 points & 10 rebounds) finished with double-doubles. This is the first time SDSU has had two players with a double-double since Nov. 14, 2014 (Cheyenne Greenhouse & Erimma Amarikwa).

THE NOTE II

SDSU outrebounded the Spartans 41-36. This is the first time they’ve lost when outrebounding their opponent.

The Aztecs return to non-conference play Wednesday evening when they host San Diego at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
