March 20, 2017 (Rancho Santa Fe) - The San Diego State women’s golf team opened the SDSU March Mayhem match-play tournament with a 3-2 victory over Iowa in the opening round Monday at The Farms Golf Club.

With the win, the fourth-seeded Aztecs advanced to the second round in the championship bracket to face No. 12 Fresno State, a 4-1 upset winner over fifth-seeded Cal. However, darkness suspended SDSU’s afternoon clash against the Bulldogs with two individual matches still in progress.

Against the Hawkeyes, Aztec senior Natalie Vivaldi supplied the winning margin with a victory over Elisa Suarez, 2 & 1. The match was a hotly contested affair with neither player building more than a one-hole advantage. Vivaldi was 1-down before sinking a birdie on the par-4 13th, while her Iowa adversary made bogey.  Two holes later, the Rancho Buena Vista High alumna jumped in front to stay with a par putt on No. 15, while Suarez carded another bogey.  The two golfers carded double-bogeys on the par-3 16th, but Vivaldi came through with another par at No. 17 to seal the win for the Scarlet and Black.

SDSU’s two other wins were secured in less dramatic fashion, with senior Sirene Blair posting a 5 & 4 conquest of Kristin Glesne, while junior Georgia Lacey emerged with a 3 & 2 triumph over Jessie Sindlinger.

Blair, who never trailed in her match, drained five birdies to go along with an eagle on the par-4 10th. Lacey, meanwhile, notched four birdies of her own, including three after the turn. The Torrey Pines High product went ahead to stay with a impressive drain on the par-4 11th, before putting the contest out of reach with a pair of successful conversions at the par-4 13th and the par-3 16th.

Conversely, junior Haleigh Krause came up short to the Hawkeyes’ Jessica Ip, who claimed a 2-up decision, while freshman Fernanda Escauriza experienced the same result in her encounter with Sophie Liu.

Krause’s match was all square after No. 16, but Ip made birdies on the last two holes, which Trumped two Aztec pars. Meanwhile, Escauriza had a chance to square her battle with Liu, but her Iowa counterpart notched a birdie on the par-5 18th to escape.

Three SDSU golfers completed their matches against Fresno State in the second-round clash, with Escauriza posting a 5 & 3 triumph over Joanna Kim, while Lacey was a 4 & 3 winner over Yifei Wang. However, Vivaldi was not as fortunate in her battle with Guðrún Björgsvindottir, as her Bulldog opponent posted a 4 & 2 victory. Meanwhile, Blair and Krause find themselves all square in their matches with Mimi Ho and Kristen Simonsen, respectively.
