October 14, 2016 (San Diego) - San Diego State used three points from Aliyah Utush to defeat Boise State, 2-0, Friday night at SDSU Sports Deck. The win evened the Aztecs record to 6-6-2 overall, but propelled them to a 4-1-2 mark in the Mountain West. The Broncos, meanwhile, fell to 5-9-2 and 4-2-1 in conference.

“It was a great result to get over Boise State, which has had our number the last couple of years,” head coach Mike Friesen said. “I thought Boise played a really good first half and gave us some trouble, but we did a nice job of sorting it out.

“We got a goal in the first half that settled us in. We played really well in the second half and created a lot of opportunities. It was a great goal by Aliyah to seal the game so that was exciting to see. We got a couple of goals, got a shutout and it put us in a great position moving forward. We have another tough one on Sunday with Utah State, but we’re trying to get control of the title race.”

The aforementioned goal that settled SDSU in was from Dani DeRosa in the 35th minute. San Diego State earned a corner kick that Victoria Barba took and fed Utush, who dribbled along the end line before connecting with DeRosa. The junior took it from there and banged in a shot from three yards out. The goal was DeRosa’s first of the year and her third point of the season. For Utush, the assist was her team-best fourth.

The first half ended with the Aztecs ahead, 1-0, and the score remained the same over the next 35 minutes despite numerous close calls from SDSU as it was looking for an insurance goal. San Diego State finally received the cushion it was seeking in the 81st minute when Utush threw the ball into Darcy Weiser and the freshman tapped it back to Utush. The junior took it from there with a 12-yard blast that doubled as her team-best third goal of 2016.

Utush, who created havoc offensively and nearly created two goals in the first half, finished with a game-high four shots, including a game-high-tying two on goal. Rachel Speros added three shots of her own, while Barba, DeRosa and Xochi Hunter attempted a pair. Gabby English made two saves in net and posted her fifth shutout.

When the dust settled, San Diego State was credited with 16 shots, six shots on goal and six corner kicks. As for the Broncos, they had eight shots, including two on goal, and five corners.

The Aztecs will play another pivotal game on Sunday when the Aggies visit SDSU Sports Deck at noon on the Mountain West Network and GoAztecs.com (free admission). San Diego State currently sits in third place with 14 points, while Utah State is one point ahead (15) and in second place. UNLV is in first place with 16 points.
