September 29, 2022 (Colorado Springs) - San Diego State women’s soccer earned a dramatic comeback tie on Thursday evening with Colorado College, 3-3. The Aztecs trailed 3-0 at one point before scoring three unanswered to earn the 3-3 draw.

Colorado College (3-4-3, 0-1-2 MW), jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first 26 minutes of the match, before SDSU (3-3-5, 1-1-1 MW) grew their way into the match.  Julia Gomez then netted her first goal as an Aztec in the 35th minute, to give the Aztecs a goal back before the halftime break. In the buildup to the goal Emma Gaines-Ramos darted down the flank before flashing a ball across the 18-yard box, which found Gomez. Gomez then dribbled around a defender and curled the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to cut the deficit to 3-1.

After the halftime break, it was the Aztecs who were on the front foot, and their hard running at altitude paid off in the 55th minute. Emma Gaines-Ramos picked up the ball at midfield, coasted past the first defender and then played a perfect pass past the Colorado College backline to find Denise Castro. Castro then took two touches in the box before slotting a shot into the bottom right corner of the net and past the outstretched gloves of the Colorado College keeper to make it 3-2 with 35 minutes to play. The goal was Castro’s team-leading sixth of the season.

San Diego State would sustain their high press and force Colorado College into conceding a free kick in a dangerous position in the 75th minute.  Poway High alum Trinity Coker took the ensuing free kick which bounced around the box before Kiera Utush thought she had found the equalizer, but her shot bounced off the crossbar and back into play. Lily Davis pounced on the rebound and put her shot into the net, tying the match at 3-3. SDSU would try to find the winner but were unable to finish any of their remaining chances and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.

The Stat: Julia Gomez scored her first goal as an Aztec, while Lily Davis’s goal in the 75th minute was the first of her career.

Up Next: The Aztecs continue their Mountain West road swing at the Air Force Academy at 1 p.m. MT on Sunday.
