September 26, 2016 (Colorado Springs, Colo.) - San Diego State redshirt freshman goalkeeper Gabby English has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week. The Winter Park, Florida native helped the Aztecs post two shutouts to vault them into first place in the league standings.

English was never tested in SDSU’s conference-opening 2-0 victory vs. Air Force. The redshirt freshman made only one save on a night where the Falcons were limited to four shots the entire game.

Two days later vs. Colorado College, English made six stops with half coming at key junctures in the game. After Milan Moses gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute, the Tigers roared back three minutes later with two shots within seconds of each other. Both attempts, which came from less than 10 yards away, were denied by English.

Then in the closing seconds of the contest, Chanisse Hendrix gathered a pass and snuck past the backline where she found herself one-on-one with English. Hendrix tried to hit the lower right corner, but English dived and smothered the ball with nine seconds remaining to preserve the win.

English, who is the first Aztec to win a weekly award from the Mountain West this season, finished the week with two shutout victories and seven saves, which helped San Diego State extend its streak of not allowing an opponent score a goal to 484:21.

SDSU returns to action on Friday when it plays at Fresno State. First tap is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT and the game will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
