Aztecs come out on top in close contest against the Bears

March 5, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team bounced back after yesterday’s loss to Hawai’i to grab a win today over Brown University, 4-3. The Aztecs won the doubles point, giving them an edge moving into singles play.

In doubles action, Kennedy Davis and Mia Smith teamed up to take down Maddie Stearns and Mariska Chamdani, 6-3, in the second seed. Shortly after, Alli Valk and Olivia Larsson finished off Devon Jack and Juliana Simon, 6-1, on the third court and the Aztecs grabbed the doubles point.

Singles decisions went back and forth, as Lord edged out Buth, 6-4, 6-3, on court one. Berta Acero dominated against Katie Ta, claiming a 7-5, 6-2 win in the fifth-seeded match. On court No. 3, Diaz struggled to hold down Stearns, falling 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.

Just as the Bears saw a streak of momentum, their chances were shot down with back-to-back Aztec victories. First, Smith took down Jack 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and then Davis decided the dual, taking Alyza Benotto to three sets in a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win.

Following today’s success, the Aztecs improve their season record to 5-9. Up next, SDSU is set to welcome Sacramento State this Friday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
