April 29, 2018 (San Diego) - Shelby Thompson led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a home run to lift San Diego State to a 3-2 win over Colorado State Sunday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium. The win gave the Aztecs (16-29, 7-11 MW) the series over the Rams (25-16, 9-9 MW).

After leaving a pair of runners on base in both the eighth and ninth inning, Thompson took a 1-2 pitch the opposite way over the right-field fence for SDSU’s first walk-off victory of the season. It was Thompson’s fourth homer of the year.

CSU took the early lead in the top of the second inning when Corina Gamboa doubled and scored on an Amber Nelson single.

San Diego State tied it in the bottom of the fifth as Taylor Adams doubled down the left-field line and moved to third on a Colorado State throwing error. Molly Sturdivant followed with a single to right field.

The Rams took the lead again in the top of the sixth on a Haley Donaldson single that scored Sarah Muzik.

SDSU answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with some small ball. Katie Byrd led off with a single and was replaced by Jordyn Fick. Fick then stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Munoz. Taylor Stewart followed with a single through the left side to tie the game at 2-2.

CSU left a runner on third with two outs in the seventh and ninth as San Diego State enjoyed a solid day by both its pitching staff and defense.

Marissa Moreno started her fourth straight game and allowed one run on four hits over three innings, while striking out one. Alex Formby relieved Moreno in the fourth and pitched the rest of the game, yielding one run on six hits and two walks over seven innings, striking out two. For the game, Moreno and Formby (10-11) held Colorado State to just a .125 average (2-for-16) with runners on base and a .200 mark (2-for-10) with runners in scoring position.

The Aztec defense, meanwhile, came up with a season-high three double plays, recording one in the first, eighth and 10th innings.

Adams had three hits to lead the SDSU offense, while Stewart and Thompson recorded two hits apiece. Munoz, meanwhile, reached base twice on a walk and a hit by pitch.
