December 3, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) –In a continuing effort to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol related crashes. The Sheriff’s Poway and Santee Stations will be deploying deputies on saturation patrols and DUI/driver’s license checkpoints tonight and tomorrow.

The DUI checkpoint in Poway is this evening (December 3rd) between 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. near the 11700 block of Poway Road. The DUI checkpoint in Santee is tomorrow (December 4th) between 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. in the 8800 block of Mission Gorge Road near Highway 52.

Sheriff Bill Gore reminds the public, “No matter what you drive or when, if deputies catch you driving impaired, you will be arrested. No exceptions. We urge you to think before you drink and make safety part of your holiday plans.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades, when the federal government began compiling figures. In California, NHTSA’s reports show DUI deaths declined by 16 percent, from 1,132 in 2007 to 950 in 2009. A DUI checkpoint is a proven effective method to lower this number.

Funding for this program was provided by a $400,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
