SHERIFF'S SEARCH AND RESCUE FIELD TRAINING JAN. 19

January 15, 2013 (San Diego County)--They answer the call anywhere in the county when someone goes missing and they do it for free. Volunteers are the driving force behind the Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) Division.

On Saturday, January 19, 25 new volunteers will join 80 other members of the SAR Division in a qualifying hike at the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, 12020 Black Mountain Road from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Base Camp is at the Ranch House.

COMMON CAUSE LAUNCHES EFFORT TO STOP VOTER SUPPRESSION IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY

October 24, 2012 (San Diego)-- It is ironic. This morning ECM attended a press conference dealing with voting suppression, while nearby volunteers from both the Democratic and Republican Parties were getting ready to register newly minted citizens after their naturalization ceremonies.

The conference was called by State Senator Leeland Yee (D-8). He was joined by State Representative Marti Block (D-78- Assembly), as well as Simon Mayeski of the non partisan Common Cause and Phillip W. Liburd, Executive Board Member of the NAACP San Diego Branch.

A nationally funded voter suppression effort is expected to employ even harsher bullying tactics on November 6th, when even more voters will be exercising their fundamental right to cast a ballot.

VOLUNTEERS HELP TRACK DOWN GRAFFITI IN LA MESA

October 14, 2012 (La Mesa)--La Mesa is serious about eradicating graffiti thanks to an organized program and dedicated volunteers, the city’s Focus publication reports.  La Mesa participates in the countywide Graffiti Tracker program, where all graffiti is photographed and logged by area and “tag.” 

The goal is to remove all graffiti within 72 hours, though often graffiti is eliminated within 24 hours.

July 7, 2012 (San Diego) --  The San Diego Half Marathon, a one-of-a kind race and fundraising event with 100 percent of its net proceeds benefiting local charities, today proudly announced that $100,000 is being donated to local San Diego-area charities from its hugely successful inaugural race last March. San Diego-area charity partners from the 2012 race include Lake Murray Playground Project, San Diego Police Department Communications Division Kitchen/Break room Renovation, Toys for Joy, Robb Field and Hickman Field.

ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION NAMES LA MESA A TREE CITY USA COMMUNITY

 
May 19, 2012 (La Mesa) -- La Mesa, CA was recognized by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. It is the 32nd year La Mesa has earned this national designation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Decide to help at the last minute? Volunteers welcome at all parks from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on October 22nd. Bring gloves and a rake or trowel - we'll have trash bags available in the parks. To sign up ahead of time, print and sign the
 agreement waiver, and bring with you to the park of your choice.
