March 10, 2017 (Sacramento) -- State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, as part of his efforts to ensure parents and students feel safe at schools regardless of their immigration status, this week asked federal law enforcement authorities to explain if they are changing a policy that had avoided immigration actions near schools.

March 9, 2012 -- State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has applauded efforts by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) to shed light on the problem of excessive use of suspension and expulsion of students as a disciplinary tool in the nation’s schools.

HERITAGE SCHOOLS CAN NOW REGISTER WITH STATE, SUPERINTENDENT TORLAKSON ANNOUNCES

 
January 9, 2012 (Sacramento) -- State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today announced that the 2012 Heritage School Registration System is open. Heritage schools—which give students a chance to focus on the language, culture, and traditions of a foreign country—must register online annually with the California Department of Education (CDE) by the end of January.
