February 20, 2023 (Jamul) – The Jamul Indian Village of California (JIV) Tribe and Jamul Casino invite San Diego to join them in observing Black History Month, a time for all of us to celebrate the rich history, culture and contributions of Black Americans.  With a number of events and initiatives scheduled throughout February, the JIV and Jamul Casino are joining the celebration by amplifying Black voices and highlighting the significance of the historical contributions of Black Americans as well as the ongoing struggles.

VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP: CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH JAZZY ASH

In Poway OnStage’s Virtual Field Trip celebrating Black History Month, Jazzy Ash will introduce students to the musical stylings of zydeco, jazz, blues and swing in her energetic and engaging concert. The free virtual concert is ongoing from now until February 26, 2021[days & times]

Ash draws out the roots of West African song traditions, rhythms and games. Extension activities include interactive Instrument Match game, a storybook reading and a visual art lesson.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATED AT GROSSMONT AND CUYAMACA COLLEGES WITH SERIES OF EVENTS

 

February 10, 2016 (El Cajon) -- A celebration of black history that includes music, dance and theater performances at Cuyamaca College and an African-American Read-in at Grossmont College are among February’s Black History Month events.

Included among the events will be tributes to iconic figures like Martin Luther King Jr., President Obama, Maya Angelou and others, in addition to lesser-known names such as Daisy Bates, a civil rights heroine who led the charge to desegregate the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957.

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN SPRING VALLEY FEB. 9

 

 

 

January 29, 2014 (Spring Valley) – February is Black History Month. To celebrate, the Spring Valley Library will hold a free community event on Saturday, February 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. 

Entertainment will be provided by the Martin Luther King Jr. Choir and the WorldBeat Center’s drummers and dancers.  The public can also meet and greet legendary National Hockey League player Willie O’Ree.  In addition, crafts, refreshments and health screenings for all ages wil be provided.

February 18, 2011 (San Diego's East County) -- The Grossmont College Music Department‘s Grossmont College Gospel Choir and Grossmont College Master Chorale will celebrate Black History Month with two performances of gospel music.

STORYTELLING & OTHER EVENTS CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

 

 

February 19, 2010 (San Diego) – Storytelling, the passing down of tales from generation to generation, has kept cultural heritage alive through the ages. In celebration of Black History Month, several black storytellers will give performances this weekend in San Diego and Spring Valley. In addition, Southwestern College hosts a Black History Cultural Day and the Malcolm X Library plans a Jamaican barbecue class—all in San Diego’s eastern regions.
