YEAR-LONG CLOSURE OF I-8 REST STOP AT BUCKMAN SPRINGS STARTS IN MARCH

February 19, 2020 (Buckman Springs) -- Crews have begun work on the Interstate 8 (I-8) Buckman Springs Safety Roadside Rest Area (SRRA) Sewer/Water Systems Restoration Project that will require fully closing the rest area for about a year, reported Caltrans officials. 
 
The Buckman Springs SRRA located along I-8 near Pine Valley in eastern San Diego County may be closed as early as March 2 for the duration of the year-long project that will construct a new sewage treatment system. The work is needed to bring the rest area in compliance with state and federal water quality standards.

WOMAN NOT WEARING SEATBELT KILLED IN ROLLOVER CARSH ON BUCKMAN SPRINGS ROAD

October 14, 2017 (Buckman Springs) – A 61-year-old woman driving south on Buckman Springs Road south of Lake Morena Drive Thursday at 3:30 p.m. missed a curve and her vehicle spun out of control.  The vehicle overturned and the motorist, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and killed.

CAMPO MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER FOR DOUBLE FATALITY CRASH IN BUCKMAN SPRINGS

January 26, 2017 (San Diego) – Campo resident Ryan Gary Renz, 24, has been arrested for murder and suspicion of driving under the influence after the Jetta vehicle he was driving flipped over last night at 6:55 p.m., killing two passengers.

NEW SHELTER OPENS AT LOS COCHES; ADVISORY EVACUATIONS AT BUCKMAN SPRINGS

 

Update 4:30 p.m. - The Pacific Coast Trail near Campo is threatened. Hikers are advised to stay off the trail, Cleveland National Forest reports.  The fire is also threatening the Hauser Wilderness area.

June 20, 2016 (San Diego's East County) 4 p.m. -- Per County Emergency Services:  The Sheriff's Department has issued an evacuation advisory near Campo and Buckman Springs due to the Border Fire. Evacuations are currently voluntary. Residents can go to Golden Acorn Casino, 1800 Golden Acorn Way, which has been set up as a temporary evacuation point. It is not a shelter.

The American Red Cross has opened an overnight shelter at Los Coches Creek Middle School (9969 Dunbar Lane, El Cajon) for residents impacted by the Border Fire.

ELDERLY MAN LEADS POLICE ON WILD MOUNTAIN CHASE

May 24 2013 (San Diego East County)- An elderly man in his eighties has been taken into custody after he led police on a wild chase through the mountains of East County. 

Incident Page Network (IPN) first reported the chase at 2 p.m. on Thursday. According to IPN, the suspect was driving his 26-foot motor home through Sunrise Highway with Sheriff’s deputies in pursuit at around 50 miles per hour. Officials confirm that the chase started in Alpine and continued eastbound on I-8, until they finally caught the man in Buckman Springs after laying down tire spikes to slow the vehicle. The motorist was reportedly distraught, IPN reported.

BRUSH FIRE AT BUCKMAN SPRINGS

Update: Cal-Fire is assisting the U.S. Forest Service with crews, engines, planes and helicopters. "Good progress" is being made, said Cal-Fire's Roxanne Provaznik. Planes and one of the helicopters have been dismissed.

September 3, 2012 (San Diego's East County) -- A fully engulfed car fire has sparked a brush fire on I-8 at Buckman Springs that IPN reports is five acres and spreading rapidly. 

An incident commander has indicated that if the blaze reaches the top of the ridge line, the wildfire has potential to reach 1,000 acres. Air tankers have been requested.

I-8 EAST CLOSED AT BUCKMAN SPRINGS


April 28, 2011 (Buckman Springs) – A driver is trapped in a vehicle following a rollover accident on I-8 east at Buckman Springs near the Border Patrol checkpoint as of 12:48 p.m. , CHP and IPN report. The roadway is closed due to debris and am ambulance is en route, along with Border Patrol.
