November 1, 2017 (Ontario, Calif.) - The San Diego Sockers made final preparations for the 2017-18 Major Arena Soccer League season after whipping Pacific Division rival Ontario Fury 8-5 in their lone preseason contest held Sunday afternoon at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

San Diego was led by Erick Tovar’s four goals and solid goalkeeping by Chris Toth.

Tovar took over the second period with two tallies in under four minutes apart. The first was off a tipped pass from Juan Topete at the top of the box which he slotted past Fury goalkeeper Jose Miranda. He then hit a laser shot past Topete after receiving a simple ball from PeeWee Ortega to extend San Diego’s lead to 3-1.

Toth was not busy in the first half, but did come up big three times on point-blank shots to preserve the advantage just before halftime.

The Sockers open the regular season on the road Thursday against lowly El Paso. The Coyotes went winless last season at 0-20 -- their namesakes, hockey's Arizona Coyotes, matched an NHL record with an 0-10-1 start over the weekend -- so have nowhere to go but up, yet it will be tough against San Diego, the 14-time indoor champions who are coming off another division crown.

The home opener will be Sunday afternoon (Nov. 5) at 5:05 p.m. in their first-ever meeting with the Syracuse Silver Knights at Valley View Casino Center on Cancer Awareness Night.

Longtime Sockers forward Anthony Media (Valhalla High grad) has retired and is returning to his real estate practice.
