UNUSUAL GALLERIES PARTICIPATE IN JULIAN OPEN STUDIOS TOUR

November 10, 2011 -- Several special art businesses are participating in this year’s Julian Open Studios tour, November 19-20.  They are open much of the year but, unlike the galleries on the Main Street of Julian, are sometimes hard to find and easy to overlook.

Beryl Warnes specializes in woven art.  She creates clothing, saddle blankets, and throws from yarns of many colors.  Most visitors find her at her loom and she is more than willing to show the intricate process of putting together several different colors into a coherent pattern.  The Julian Weaving Works is located in Santa Ysabel, next to the Santa Ysabel Art Gallery, and can be easily identified by the colorful blankets and capes in the front patio.

The Charlotte Mitchell Gallery, located in Wynola across from Wynola Pizza, features Charlotte’s glass art.  Fused glass and metal combine in swirling forms to make a colorful whole while the gallery itself is a work of art both inside and out.  It is located in an old building painted bright yellow with red and blue trim and flowers in front.  Charlotte also makes Christmas tree ornaments and jewelry from glass.

The Skagen Ranch Gallery, located in a historic barn, is hard to find without a map or detailed directions as it is way back in the hills.   “Art From Everywhere” is an apt description for a country gallery which carries paintings and folk art from India, Africa, the Far East and Europe as well as Kiki Skagen’s original oil paintings. The horses, who live on the other side of the gallery wall, like carrots.

Specializing in local artists, the Banner Queen Gallery is set at the foot of Banner Grade where the mountains meet the High Desert in a delightful old ranch building.  It will be featuring miniature paintings in a special showing on the weekend of November 19 and 20 but also has larger works by many well-known area painters.  Dorothy Mushet, the owner, is also a well-known Julian artist.

The Julian Open Studios Tour will take place November 19-20 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day.  Maps, which serve as tickets, cost $10 and will be available at the Julian Chamber of Commerce, Wynola Pizza, Julian Yesteryears in the Wynola Farms Marketplace, the Falcon Gallery and Mountain Gypsy as well as at all participating artists’ locations.
