SDSU falls short vs. Big Green at RSF Tennis Club

March 17, 2018 (Rancho Santa Fe) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team came up short in Friday’s neutral-site matchup vs. Dartmouth at the Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club. The Aztecs dropped a narrow 4-3 match to the Big Green to fall to 7-8 on the season.

The Aztecs’ No. 1 doubles pair junior Jenny Moinard and sophomore Mia Smith continued to show its strength by putting up a solid 6-2 win over Abigail Chiu and Julia Schroeder. Soon after, the Big Green took an early lead over the Aztecs by claiming the doubles point after Maddie Hwang and Allison Chuang nabbed a 6-2 victory over freshmen Nnena Nadozie and Abbie Mulbarger on court three, as well as a second seed 7-5 win for Racquel Lyn and Kristina Mathis over seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz.

Singles decisions bounced back-and-forth between the Big Green and the Aztecs, as Mathis put Dartmouth’s second team point on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Buth in the one seed. Smith took a straight set win over Hwand, 6-4, 6-3, while Abbie Mulbarger topped Chuyang Guan, 6-3, 7-5 on court five.

Nadozie was not as fortunate, dropping a 7-5, 6-3 decision in the four seed to Chiu, but Moinard pulled off a 7-5, 6-4 win on court three to even the score to 3-all. With the dual on the line, Diaz fought for three sets in the two seed but ultimately dropped her match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, to Schroeder.

THE NOTE

The Aztecs drop decisions to the Big Green in back-to-back years following Friday’s loss at RSF Tennis Club and last season at home, when they fell 5-2 to Dartmouth.
