SDSU logs first conference win of the season against Wolfpack

April 13, 2018 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team hosted conference foe Nevada on Friday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center where they rallied past the Wolfpack, 4-3. The Aztecs dropped the doubles point but found their way to four singles victories to take their first conference win.

SDSU looked to add to its 12 doubles points on the season, but played down to the third match where they ultimately fell to the Wolfpack. On court No. 1, junior Jenny Moinard and sophomore Mia Smith struggled to come back against Nevada’s Claudia Herrero and Blaga Delic, falling 6-2, but seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz topped opponents Mellisa Huchet and Marta Ruedas, 6-4. On court three, junior Magda Aubets and freshman Nnena Nadozie took on Anastaysha Gorbacheva and Adriana Gergelyova and were ultimately unable to top the Wolfpack, dropping a 7-5 decision to give Nevada the doubles point.

In singles action, Moinard locked down the first point for SDSU with her 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ruedas in the third seed. On court five, freshman Abbie Mulbarger came away with a solid 6-3, 6-3 win over Nevada’s Huchet, but shortly after, Nadozie dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Maria Tatarnikova in the sixth seed.

Tied at two-all, Buth’s match went to a third set where she eventually dropped the tie break, 6-4, 1-6, 6-7 (2). In the fourth seed, Aubets went on to a third set where she topped Delic, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. On court two, Diaz dropped her first set but charged back in the second and finished on top, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) against Gergelyova.

THE NOTE

Junior Jenny Moinard continues her winning ways in singles, logging her seventh straight victory with today’s win over Ruedas.

The Aztecs (10-10, 1-1) travel to Central California Tuesday, April 17, where they will take on Fresno State at 10 a.m.
