February 19, 2019 (San Diego) - In a shocking turn of events, MLB all-star third baseman Manny Machado has signed with the Padres after being scouted by the Yankees and several other teams, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reports.

Machado’s deal is the biggest free agent contract in American sports history:  10 years and $300 million with an opt-out after the fifth season.

Machado posted a 905 OPS in 2018, finishing the season with a .297/.367/.538 slash line, 37 home runs, 107 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. In 66 regular-season games with the Dodgers last season, Machado hit .273 with 13 homers and 42 RBIs.  He has faced criticism for not being a good base runner and told Fox Sports during last year’s postseason that hustling is “not my cup of tea.”

Machado was drafted No. 3 overall by the Orioles in 2010 out of high school and made his MLB debut in 2012.
