July 21, 2016 (Cleveland) – On Closing Night, Day Four, perhaps the biggest day of the Republican National Convention, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump formally announced his election as Republican presidential nominee.

“Friends, delegates and fellow Americans: I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States,” he began. “Together, we will lead our party back to the White House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace. We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order.”

He faulted Hillary Clinton for "bad judgment" as Secretary of State, citing the rise of ISIS and terrorism. He called for a halt to immigration from terrorist-prone nations as well as illegal immigration.  He pledged to repeal Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act) and to support Supreme Court justices with conservative ideology similary to the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

The other pivotal speech on closing night came from Trump’s daughter, Ivanka.  In her speech, she praised her father and campaigned for women’s rights.  Despite Trump’s history of sexist remarks to women, Ivanka, 34, was sure to bring up how her father hired women before many other companies did.

"He is colorblind and gender neutral," she said, a phrase which drew ire from the Twittersphere.  Everyone was left wondering if Ivanka’s speech really could sway the female vote to Trump.  Some women interviewed by NPR say that Ivanka’s personality, which one female interviewee described as “strong-willed” and with an entrepreneurial spirit, could be enough to sway the female vote to the millionaire and former reality TV star.

Liz - Thanks for pinchhitting for me!

Overall you did a solid job covering the convention highlights. I added a bit more info and a link to Trump's full acceptance speech for those who want to read it and draw their own conclusions.

Our "World Watch" this week, to be posted in a couple of days, will have links to more convention coverage from a variety of publications.

Readers, for those not familiar with Liz, her minor at SDSU was journalism and she is also our editorial assistant in addition to sports writing.  I appreciate Liz being a good sport and filling in during this busy news week, doing writeups not only on politics but also writing/editing stories on international terrorism, wildfires, local events and keeping our wildfire/alert system running while I was away for 10 days.

There's no such thing as a slow news week for editors to take vacations anymore!

Guys, I need to apologize.

If my "coverage" of the RNC seems a bit sub-par to you, it's because I'm not a good politics writer because I don't really pay attention to politics.  As you guys know, I'm generally the sportswriter for ECM and Miriam handles the political stuff, but since she's out of town, I have no choice but to cover the RNC myself based on what I hear off of Twitter and the Internet (because I still need to cover the Padres games for you guys).  So please be gentle with me because I honestly know almost nothing about politics.
