April 23, 2017 (San Diego) – A proposal to remove the Aztecs name and Aztec warrior mascot from San Diego State University has been voted down overwhelmingly by the Associated Students’ University Council.

The council voted 24 to 1 to keep the Aztecs identity. However, a similar proposal will be weighed by the University Senate, which will consider the matter in the fall.

Those who wanted to eliminate use of the Aztecs name contended that it is offensive to indigenous people.

Those who support keeping the Aztecs identity note that the university already went through an extensive review process that started back in 2000. The logo and mascot were altered to better reflect Aztec culture and history, eliminating the cartoonish Monty Montezuma in 2006.

On social media, alumni have weighed in on the recent proposal, arguing that no decision to eliminate the school’s long-standing name or mascot should be made without including the university’s many proud Aztecs alumni in the process.

Good job. Glad to see there is some sanity left at our school. We honor the Aztec spirit while forgetting the human sacrifices?
