Imagine...

...how people dealt with and undoubtedly suffered through heatwaves before electricity was in homes. No air conditioning for sure, not even fans. That was definitely rough! I believe that there are quite a few people who deal with the extreme heat using only fans because they either don't have an A/C, or can't afford to use it. Even utilizing the SDG&E discount CARE program for qualifying customers, it's gotten expensive when living on a tight budget.

How people dealt with heat before AC?

It  typically wasn't quite as hot then as now, but could still be very uncomfortable.  I recall relatives' homes in Texas before AC, though that had fans and/or a swamp cooler.

Here in California, homes during the Spanish era were built with thick adobe walls and clay tile roofs, to better insulate the homes. They also had lots of shade trees.
