LEMON GROVE COUNCILMEMBER TO FACE RESTRAINING ORDER AND POTENTIAL CRIMINAL CHARGES IN COURT AFTER ACCUSATION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

April 29, 2022 (Lemon Grove) — Lemon Grove Councilmember Liana LeBaron was arrested and charged with domestic violence on April 18 by the San Diego County Sheriff’s department, following an altercation with her husband over his life insurance policy.

 

A restraining order was filed the next day under the name Timothy C. Howell, which required that LeBaron leave her home upon its court approval. The protective order will last until May 10, when LeBaron will appear in court to address the issue.

April 27, 2022 (San Diego) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a board letter put forth by Supervisor Joel Anderson and Vice Chair Nora Vargas that will provide economic opportunities for small businesses in the unincorporated County.  Their board action was inspired by a letter written to Supervisor Anderson from an Alpine constituent and was approved unanimously at the April 26, 2022 Board of Supervisors meeting.

April 13, 2022 (San Diego)  — Volunteers are needed to help install more than 400 free smoke alarms for local families in El Cajon.

The American Red Cross of San Diego and Imperial Counties is leading the Sound the Alarm smoke alarm installation and home fire safety event on May 14 with Heartland Fire and Rescue, as part of a national Red Cross initiative in May to install 50,000 free smoke alarms with partners in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country.

April 25, 2022 (El Cajon) - Local Umbrella Media, in conjunction with numerous other “do-gooders,” is sponsoring O’Grady’s Holes for Heroes Golf Tournament on Friday, May 6th at El Cajon’s Cottonwood Golf Course. The proceeds will benefit active-duty military, veterans, and first responders.

The beneficiary of the proceeds, Saddles in Service, based in Alpine, whose mission is to combat the suicide rates of active-duty military, veterans, and first responders using equine assisted learning and activities, is a non-profit 501(c)(3).

FOUR ORPHANED BEAR CUBS SUCCESSFULLY RETURNED TO THEIR HOMES IN THE WILD

Cubs received care, grew strong at San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center.

April 25, 2022 (Ramona) -- Four orphaned bear cubs who have been growing strong at San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center for the past six months, have been returned to the wild. The bears were released on April 14, 2022 by biologists with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) in Central and Northern California.

April 21, 2022 (Spring Valley) – The Spring Valley Cleanup Crew, San Diego County Parks and Recreation, and a coalition of Spring Valley community groups are collaborating for Spring Valley Earth Day this Saturday, Apr. 23, at 1 p.m. at 3180 Bancroft Dr, Spring Valley, CA 91977 for a fully encompassing and intersectional Earth Day event. 
 
The cleanup crew plans to empower their community by involving the public in the process of planting new trees in the park, participating in a community cleanup, registering their neighbors to vote, offering free skate lessons, and providing folks with information regarding local board meetings. This way, there is a community investment in Spring Valley’s urban canopy along with a newly reclaimed agency.

MAN TRIES TO LURE BOY INTO VAN IN SANTEE

April 20, 2022 (Santee) - The Santee Sheriff’s Station wants parents to be aware after a stranger followed and approached a child.  

It happened on Tuesday, April 19 around 3:30 p.m. as the 16-year-old boy was riding his bicycle home from Mast Park in the 9100 block of Carlton Hills Boulevard. The incident was reported to the Sheriff's Department an hour later.

April 20, 2022 (Santee) “All of a sudden I hear this loud rumbling,” said Jill Perry, house manager for Home for Guiding Hands in Santee. “We were just sitting down to lunch.” That rumbling was the sound, and aftereffects, when a Cessna small plane, which killed the pilot, Dr. Sugata Das, and a UPS driver, Steve Krueger, crashed in a Santee neighborhood on October 11, 2021, according to a video published by the San Diego Union Tribune.

UPCOMING CLOSURE OF BALLANTYNE STREET FOR CREEK RESTORATION AND BRIDGE WORK

The City of El Cajon has begun a $2.8 million restoration project of Broadway Creek. As part of the project, a portion of Ballantyne Street in El Cajon will be closed while crews widen the bridge over the creek and make needed street improvements.

VEHICLE VS. PEDESTRIAN ON INTERSTATE 8 RESULTS IN FATALITY

April 19, 2022 (El Cajon) - On April 18, 2022 at approximately 10:30 p.m., a yet to be identified male pedestrian began walking in the traffic lanes of westbound Interstate 8, west of State Route 67. As a result, the pedestrian was struck by a Kia Optima driven by a 36-year-old female from El Cajon, a Dodge Charger driven by a 28-year-old male from Chula Vista and an unidentified vehicle.  Unfortunately, the pedestrian died at the crash scene.  Two of the three drivers who struck the pedestrian remained on scene and are cooperating with the investigation.  The driver of the third vehicle, fled the scene and was last seen on Interstate 8 westbound.

After fielding numerous calls from residents frustrated by the camp beyond the city’s control, the city posted a sign that reads “Now leaving El Cajon.”

April 16, 2022 (San Diego’s East County) – Opponents of wind farms in San Diego’s East County have long voiced concerns over potentially deadly impacts on eagles. Now a major wind energy company, NextEra Energy, a subsidiary of ESI Energy, has pleaded guilty to violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and killing 150 eagles at multiple wind energy facilities.

April 16, 2022 (San Diego) – Gusty winds are forecast tonight through Friday, with temperatures heating up early this week.  Temperatures Monday could reach 95 to 100 degrees in the deserts. Tuesday through Friday, gusts as strong as 60 miles an hour are forecast in the mountains and deserts.

 

By Friday, however, rain is forecast across the region, along with cooler weather.

Representatives from La Mesa, San Diego Gas & Electric and San Diego Community Power will discuss their design to expand cheaper cleaner electricity.

There are two options to participate:
