October 21, 2021 (El Cajon) -- St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to realize their full potential, will host its 8th Annual “Swing with Santa” Golf Tournament in memory of Don Parent on Friday, November 5. Guests are invited to join SMSC at the Singing Hills Golf Resort Pine Glen 3-Par Executive Course at Sycuan (3007 Dehesa Road, El Cajon, CA 92019) for a 10:30 a.m. check-in and a shotgun start at 12:00 p.m. Participants can expect a day full of fun, opportunity drawings, games, a golf ball drop, food and drinks, and a visit from Santa.

April 1, 2021 (El Cajon) -- St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC), a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has been awarded a grant from The Conrad Prebys Foundation for $25,000. The grant is designated towards Sophie’s Gallery Virtual Art Program. SMSC was among 121 local arts, education, health, and science projects to receive a combined $78 million in grant funding from The Conrad Prebys Foundation’s inaugural grant cycle.

MORNING GLORY BRUNCH FROG RACE GOES VIRTUAL TO BENEFIT ST. MADELEINE SOPHIE’S CENTER ON APRIL 17

March 15, 2021 (El Cajon) -- St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC) will host its signature Morning Glory Brunch Frog Race virtually this year.  The Virtual Morning Glory Brunch Frog Race will take place on Saturday, April 17, 2021 and will be celebrating the event’s 20th anniversary. All proceeds benefit St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, which educates and empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. 

The community is encouraged to participate in the frog race by purchasing rubber frogs to be entered in the race. Volunteer “Frogettes” will splash from the end of the pool deck, without touching the frogs, to assist the frogs in reaching the finish line. Winners of the Frog Race will be announced during a live streaming event, and all proceeds from purchased frogs will benefit SMSC’s Garden and Aquatic Programs.

DON PARENT, LONGTIME SDG&E SPOKESMAN, DIES OF CANCER

May 27, 2020 (San Diego’s East County) – Donald “Don” Parent, long-time Public Affairs Manager for SDG&E and an active participant in many local business and community organizations, died May 25 after a three-year battle with prostate cancer.

“Everyone who knew Don loved him.  He was unfailingly kind, ever ready to help, and could always make you laugh,” his family posted on his Facebook page, voicing gratitude for many heartfelt messages received.  “They are testament to the man he was, and of how many people he touched.”

NEW MURAL UNVEILED IN EL CAJON

December 19, 2019 (El Cajon) -- St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center held a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil a new mural in historic Downtown El Cajon on Tuesday.
 
The mural, a whimsical depiction of east county flora and fauna is located on the east side of 181 East Rea Avenue (facing Suzfeld Way.) 
 
The mural was painted by Kline Swonger and is one of several colorful murals along what has become known as Alley Cat Alley, home to the annual Alley Cat Art Walk.

November 16, 2018 (El Cajon) --St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC) held its 5th annual Swing with Santa Golf Tournament on Friday, November 2, 2018. The sold-out event raised more than $16,000 to fund SMSC’s 2018 Student Holiday Celebration. The annual golf tournament featured a fun-filled day of games, a silent auction, food and more.

Golfers received a round of golf, lunch, a happy hour reception and a gift bag. Guests also met Santa and Elvis, who arrived to the golf course by helicopter, and SMSC student, Sam Dupree, sang the national anthem to help kick off the golf tournament. The Presenting Sponsor for this year’s Golf Tournament was Sycuan Casino, Tournament Sponsor was Keller Williams Realty San Diego East Foothills, and the On the Green Sponsors included A. Vidovich Construction Co., Cartwright Termite & Pest Control, Inc., EDCO Disposal, Lundy Insurance Services, Inc. and SDG&E.

Ticket prices for the gala cost $55 per person prior to the event or $60 per person at the door.

"WINGS & SNOW" HOLIDAY ART SHOW AT SOPHIE'S GALLERY

 

November 28, 2014 (El Cajon)--Holiday cheer is in full effect this December with the opening of Flyway, the art exhibit of this year’s “Wings & Snow” show!  St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, an El Cajon-based center serving over 400 adults with developmental disabilities through innovative programs, is hosting its 14th holiday art show featuring bird-themed art.  Flyway, at Sophie’s Gallery in El Cajon, will offer artwork created by St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center’s students. The artists have crafted mosaic birdhouses, bird plaques, clay angels, fused glass ornaments, soap dishes, and felted bird art. The art will be displayed at Sophie’s Gallery El Cajon (109 Rea Ave.) from December 1st–31st.

July 2, 2014 (Mt. Helix) – It was a very important date for guests at the Mad Hatter wine tasting party hosted by vintner Stephanie Young and Laurie Delaney at the Manor Vineyard on Mt. Helix.

Prizes were awarded for best costumes as guests mixed, mingled, munched appetizers and savored vintages brought by guests.  Vineyard consultant Greg Maness poured wines and spoke about our region’s fast-growing wine industry at the May 18 event.

MORNING GLORY BRUNCH PROVES A HOPPING SUCCESS AT ST. MADELEINE SOPHIE’S CENTER

April 19, 2014 (El Cajon ) – More than $45,000 was raised at this year’s Morning Glory Brunch, held on  April 12 at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center in El Cajon to benefit the center’s innovative programs helping the developmentally disabled. 

A highlight of the occasion included the ever-popular frog race, which had more than 500 entries this year vying for prizes. St. Madeleine’s swim team helped the plastic frog “contestants” along, kicking and splashing at the edge of the pool, while a “frog princess” at the opposite end declared the official winners.

Sophie’s Vineyard will celebrate a special sneak-peek planting party on April 5

March 11, 2014 (El Cajon)-- St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, the East County vocational day program for more than 400 adults with developmental disabilities, has announced the grand opening of Sophie’s Vineyard. As part of its expanding garden, the Center will install 290 vines in a unique double row design with the purpose of providing students with an education on grape agriculture, selling table grapes at local farmers markets, and the opportunity to partner with local wineries and wine makers.

March 9, 2013 (San Diego) – St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center will be the featured special guest artist at the Art Glass Guild’s Spring Patio Show and Sale on Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The largest art glass show in Southern California will be held at Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. 

All forms of art glass including blown, fused, torch worked, stained glass, cast, etched, and mosaic will be featured. Over 30 juried glass artists will be exhibiting their art.

Flowers, herbs and other plants on sale to public

 

June 2, 2011 (El Cajon) -- St. Madeline Sophie's Center how has a Certified Organic Garden program that includes a full citrus orchard, flower gardens, a passive-solar greenhouse, a propagation house, ornamental trees, shrubs, herbs, and a worm farm.

 

The Garden Program cultivates more than strong, healthy plants; it is a vocational training ground where professional horticulture managers help students reap the benefits of developing physical and mental skills, social relationships, teamwork, self-esteem, and a sense of community and accomplishment.

MORNING GLORY JAZZ BRUNCH AND FROG RACE APRIL 16 TO BENEFIT ST. MADELEINE SOPHIE’S CENTER

 

20% of funds for developmentally disabled adults will be cut under the Governor’s budget

 

March 24, 2011 – Cash prizes totaling $10,000 will be given away to three winners in the 6th annual St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center Frog Race, which will be held April 16 during the Morning Glory Jazz Brunch at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center.

 

Early bird discounts end April 1st—and the organization, which helps developmentally disabled adults, is in urgent need of help.
