March 12, 2023 (Mesa, Ariz.) - The Padres went to Mesa for the first time this spring.  Seth Lugo started against James Kaprielian for Oakland.

The Padres finally cracked through in the third with a solo homer from Rougned Odor and the Padres led 1-0 after three.

Jackson Merrill added another run in the fourth with a single that scored Alfonso Rivas and the Padres led 2-0 after four.

Rangel Ravelo added another with a sac fly in the fifth that scored Jose Azocar, but just like that, in the home half of the fifth, the lead was cut to one as Conner Capel launched a two-run homer and the Padres led 3-2 after five.

Odor saved the day in the seventh with a solo homer to give the Padres some padding, but the As stayed hot; Lawrence Butler singled in the home half of the seventh to score J.J. Bleday and it came to a head when Pablo Reyes blasted a three-run homer and the As led 6-4 after seven.

Jonah Bride homered in the eighth and Bleday hit an inside-the-park home run and the Padres were stunned by the As, who won 8-6, despite a two-run homer from Preston Tucker in the ninth.
