July 17, 2017 (Denver) - The Padres took the series against the Giants in commanding fashion.  Now it was on to Denver to face another NL West rival, the Rockies.  Luis Perdomo started against German Marquez for the Rockies.

The slumping Rockies were still easily able to overtake the Padres.  Charlie Blackmon hit a solo homer in the first to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.

Jabari Blash saved the Padres again with a two-run homer in the second to make it 2-1 Padres, but Trevor Story erased that deficit with an RBI single that scored Mark Reynolds in the Rockies’ half of the second to tie the game.

In the bottom of the third with the bases loaded, Perdomo walked Reynolds, which walked Blackmon home, to give the Rockies the lead again.  Perdomo next walked Ian Desmond, walking home D.J. LeMahieu.  Story came in with the dagger, doubling to score Reynolds and Nolan Arenado.  Marquez worked some pitcher magic with a single to score Story and the Rockies capped off a five-run third and made the score 7-2.

Carlos Asuaje tried to give the Padres some relief in the seventh with an RBI single that scored Allen Cordoba and kicked Marquez out of the game.  The Rockies led 7-3.

Colorado kept increasing their lead.  Gerardo Parra knocked out a solo homer in Colorado’s half of the seventh to make it 8-3 Rockies.

Hector Sanchez homered in the eighth, Blash hit a sac fly to score Jose Pirela and Allen Cordoba singled to score Matt Szczur and the Padres crept closer, trailing 8-6.

LeMahieu gave the Rockies some breathing room with a sac fly in Colorado’s half of the eighth to score Pat Valaika to give Colorado a 9-6 win in the series opener.

Game two is tomorrow night at 8:40 p.m.  Dinelson Lamet starts against Antonio Senzatela for the Rockies.
