July 25, 2017 (San Diego) - What’s different about this year’s Padres is that, instead of losing without making an effort, they actually are making an effort.  They’re still losing most of their games, but the scores are a lot closer.  Last night against the Mets, the final score was 5-3.  Believe it or not, the Padres are improving.  But they still looked for a win tonight against Seth Lugo, who was on the hill for the Mets against Kyle Lloyd.

Yoenis Cespedes gave the Mets the lead in the first with his 10th home run of the season against the rookie and it was 1-0.

The Padres weren’t letting last night happen again.  Hunter Renfroe and Allen Cordoba homered in the second.  Cordoba’s homer was good for two and the Padres took a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth, the Mets crept closer with Travis d’Arnaud’s single that scored Jay Bruce.  The Padres were hanging on by a thin thread with a 3-2 lead.

Asdrubal Cabrera cut that thread with a double that scored Curtis Granderson in the fifth.  Cespedes doubled to score Cabrera and the Mets led 4-3.

Wil Myers knotted the game up again with a sac fly that scored Matt Szczur in the Padres’ half of the fifth.

What happened in the seventh was a blur of dramatic fashion.  Cespedes hit what should’ve been just a one-RBI triple to right.  Renfroe made a bad throw to third to catch him, he ran home, the throw at the plate was way off the mark and Cespedes had himself basically an inside-the-park home run.  None of us were expecting this, right?  But it happened and the Mets took a 6-4 lead.

Dusty Coleman tried to start a ninth inning rally with a double that scored Cory Spangenberg all the way from first, but Jose Pirela grounded out and the Mets prevailed, taking game two 6-5.

Game three is at 7:10 p.m. tomorrow night.  Steven Matz starts for the Mets against Jhoulys Chacin.
