July 28, 2017 (San Diego) - After a successful home series against the Mets, in which they split two games apiece, the Padres welcomed another member of the Eastern National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates, for the weekend.  Chad Kuhl started on the mound for Pittsburgh against the Padres’ newest acquisition from the Royals, Travis Wood.

The Padres had some good chances to start, but they didn’t plan on Andrew McCutchen.  In the third, he hit a blast to left to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, little by little, the Padres clawed their way back.  Wood singled with the bases loaded, a run came in and there would’ve been more, but bad base running by Allen Cordoba allowed the Pirates to escape a jam with a one-run lead, 2-1.

Cory Spangenberg finished the job in the sixth with a long triple to right that scored Jose Pirela all the way from first to tie the game.  Cordoba atoned for his earlier mistake when Daniel Hudson threw a wild pitch that was a walk for Cordoba and scored Spangenberg to give the Padres the 3-2 win to start the series.

Game two is tomorrow at 5:40 p.m.  Ivan Nova starts for the Pirates against Dinelson Lamet.
