ECM PADRES REPORT: PADRES SPLIT WITH SPLIT SQUADS

March 23, 2023 (Phoenix/Peoria, Ariz.) - The Padres had their first split squad game of the season today.  One squad stayed home against the Royals and the other traveled to Phoenix to face the Brewers.  



Kansas City vs. San Diego

 

Brady Singer started for the Royals against Ryan Weathers.

 

Salvador Perez kicked things off with a deep two-run homer to left and the Royals led 2-0 after one.

 

The Padres got one back in the second and the Royals led 2-1 after two.

 

Luis Campusano saved the day in the fourth with a three-run homer and the Padres now led 4-2 after four.

 

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a solo homer in the fifth and the Padres still led 4-3 after five.

 

Adam Engel hit a sac fly in the sixth that scored Ha-Seong Kim and the Padres led 5-3 after six.

 

Jackson Merrill singled in the eighth to score Samuel Zavala and the Padres took the first game of the split 6-3.

 

San Diego at Milwaukee

 

Jay Groome started against Gus Varland for the Brewers.

 

Christian Yelich grounded a ball to short in the second that went off of Tim Lopes’ glove and scored two.  Luis Urias walked with the bases loaded to score Garrett Mitchell from third and the Brewers led 3-0 after two.

 

Victor Caratini hit a solo homer in the third and the Brewers led 4-0 after three.

 

The Padres got on the board in the fourth with Rougned Odor’s single that scored Jake Cronenworth and the Brewers led 4-1 after four.  The Padres got one more run, but the Brewers prevailed with a 4-2 win.

 

UP NEXT 

 

The Padres go to Tempe to face the Angels.  First pitch is at 1:10 p.m. and will be mlb.tv's free game of the day.  Blake Snell starts against Griffin Canning for the Angels.
