August 24, 2017 (St. Louis) - The Padres let a game slip last night as the Cardinals came back from a horrid loss Tuesday night to win 6-1.  The Padres tried to take the series tonight with Luis Perdomo on the mound against Carlos Martinez for the Cards.

The Cardinals started things in the bottom of the fourth with a Jedd Gyorko double that scored Dexter Fowler and the Cards took a 1-0 lead.

But the Padres came back hard.  In the fifth, Cory Spangenberg reached base as the Cardinals tried unsuccessfully to turn a double play and an errant throw by Martinez caused Manuel Margot to score.  Matt Szczur singled to score Carlos Asuaje and the Padres took a 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals tied it up in the sixth with Yadier Molina’s single that scored Paul DeJong.

In the ninth inning, everyone thought we were going to extra innings, but surprisingly, the Padres were the ones who stopped this one from going to extras.  Asuaje singled to score Jabari Blash and Jose Pirela hit sac fly to score Margot and the Padres took a 4-2 lead.

Randal Grichuk narrowed the deficit to one with a solo homer in the Cardinals’ half of the ninth, but Brad Hand struck out back-to-back hitters and the Padres won the game 4-3 and their first series against the Cardianals since 2011.

The Padres head to Miami for the weekend.  Jealous?  First pitch on Friday is at 4:10 p.m.  Travis Wood starts against Adam Conley for the Marlins.
