September 18, 2017 (San Diego) - Avoiding a sweep even though you’ve had a terrible series is like a backhanded gratifying feeling, like someone giving you a golf clap.  The Padres came home to golf claps as they prepared for a three-game series with the Diamondbacks.  Patrick Corbin started tonight’s game one for the Diamondbacks against Luis Perdomo.

Hunter Renfroe was sitting in El Paso watching his parent team be mediocre, so when he got called up today, he decided to change things and blasted a three-run homer in the first to give the Padres a 3-0 lead.

Austin Hedges added one more home run in the second on a clean crack off the bat to straightaway center and out of the park for a 4-0 Padres lead.

The Diamondbacks got on the board in the third thanks to David Peralta’s RBI single that scored Chris Hermann.  J.D. Martinez added another RBI single that scored Ketel Marte and the Padres’ lead was cut in half, but they held strong and took game one 4-2.

Tomorrow’s game two is at 7:10 p.m.  Zack Godley starts for Arizona against Travis Wood.

Transactions:

  • Travis Jankowski, Hunter Renfroe, Tim Melville, Rocky Gale and Christian Villanueva called up from AAA El Paso
  • Dusty Coleman and Jose Valdez designated for assignment
